Below is a check list of what we are looking for...

1)     Your spirit(s) must be Australian made & owned

2)    You must have your own cellar door / distillery / still

3)    Your still must be made of copper and be over 100 litres in capacity

4)    We require exclusive national access to your product(s)

5)    We are looking for unique Australian products

6)    We are seeking products made with authenticity & integrity

7)    The distiller(s) must be willing to be the face of their brand(s)

8)    We are seeking genuine aged spirits (whisky, rum, brandy etc)

9)    We are seeking genuine distilled white spirits (gin, eau de vie)

10)   We seek partners who are willing to receive constructive feedback to help develop their brands

CHALLENGES

  • Transport Costs - Australia has one of the highest costs of transport in developed countries, due to the shear tyranny of distance versus the small population. Did you know Perth is one of the most isolated major cities in the world.

  • Spirit Taxes - Australia has one of the highest spirit taxes in the world. Did you know a 700ml bottle of Gin can attract up to $30.00 in taxes.

  • Location - Over 90% of Australian distilleries are based outside of metropolitan areas.

  • Distributors - There are not many national spirit distributors or wholesalers.

  • Scale - Australian craft spirit production is quite small compared to other countries like the UK and US.

  • Market Share - The volume share of Australian made and owned spirits is less that 1%.

  • Business Acumen - A lot of Australian craft distilleries don't understand supplier / distributor relationships, it's a burden on growth in the industry. Australian Craft Distilleries also need basic fundamentals in place like a 'business plan' and 'marketing and brand strategy' to succeed. A good place to start is with a SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats).

  • Marketing & Branding - To be blunt...gone are the days where craft distilleries can produce great tasting spirits with second rate packaging, poor branding and budget looking marketing and vice versa. If these craft distilleries are unable to evolve their branding and marketing themselves they need to employ an experienced brand agency. There is no room in the market for poor quality spirits either. First impressions are lasting, you only get one chance to make a first impression with wholesale customers, consumers and shoppers. The look, the taste and story of your brand is everything.

  • Financial - Australian craft distilleries who start up a distillery to 'get rich quick' will most likely fail. It can take years to build a brand and reputation and even longer to eventually trade in the black.
